Timeframes Guide
Match your trading style to the right chart timeframe for cleaner signals.
Timeframe selection is one of the most consequential decisions in technical analysis. The same asset can show a strong uptrend on the daily chart while correcting sharply on the hourly. James supports timeframes from 5-minute all the way up to monthly, covering every major trading style.
Each timeframe affects indicator sensitivity, expected price moves, and the reliability of Elliott Wave counts. Shorter timeframes carry more noise; longer timeframes produce fewer but higher-quality signals.

Trading Style Guide
Scalping — 5m and 15m
Scalping timeframes capture very short-lived price moves, typically held for minutes. Signal noise is high at these resolutions — indicators fire more frequently but with lower accuracy. RSI and VWAP are the most reliable base indicators on 5m and 15m. Elliott Wave counts are less dependable at this scale. If you are scalping, use the 15m for entry signals and the 1h for directional context.
Intraday — 30m, 1h, 2h
Intraday timeframes are well-suited to traders who open and close positions within the same session. The 1h is the most broadly used intraday resolution — indicators have enough history to produce meaningful readings, and MACD crossovers on the 1h carry substantially more weight than on the 5m. VWAP remains highly relevant here, as most intraday traders reference it for directional bias.
Swing — 4h, 6h, 12h
Swing timeframes are designed for multi-day holds targeting larger moves. The 4h timeframe consistently produces the best signal-to-noise ratio across the indicator set — EMA ribbon crossovers, Bollinger Band squeezes, and MACD crossovers are all significantly more reliable at 4h than at shorter intervals. Elliott Wave counts become meaningfully accurate starting at this timeframe.
Position — 1d
The daily chart is the benchmark timeframe for position traders. Signals generated on the 1d carry the most weight for multi-week entries, and the 200 EMA is one of the most widely watched levels in all markets at this resolution. Market Prediction output is most actionable on the 1d due to reduced noise and stronger historical signal fidelity.
Investor — 1w and 1M
Weekly and monthly timeframes smooth out all short-term volatility and reveal the multi-month macro structure of an asset. Support and resistance levels on the weekly and monthly carry extreme significance — reversals at these zones often define cycles lasting months to years. Elliott Wave Theory is most reliable at these timeframes, where multi-degree wave patterns can be cleanly identified.
